Remote home surveillance is possible when a surveillance camera is properly set up to be viewed over the internet at a remote location. A high speed internet connection is required at the home and at the remote location. An ethernet or router connection with properly installed software provide the opportunity to view the cameras observation at a remote location. With a properly connected camera the observation is available for viewing on a 3 or 4G Cell phone or a high speed connected computer.
There are three different types of cameras that work very well as a remote home surveillance camera. They include a hardwired camera connected to the computer, a wireless IP camera, or a carrier current camera. The camera systems are available at local retail and online stores with various models and manufacturers.
Direct Hardwired
With a hardwired camera the signal and the power run through a cable to a recording device. Then a connection is made to the computer. With the proper software the signal is transmitted through the internet to a remote computer or 3 or 4G cell phone. Direct wiring will also permit the viewing on a television. Each system offers many different functions and features. Two features available with all systems are motion activation, and recording at specific times. A direct hardwired camera is stationary unlike a wireless IP or a carrier current system.
Wireless IP
IP cameras are closed circuit television cameras using internet protocol to transmit video over a high speed ethernet link. IP cameras are networked with a digital video recorder or a network video recorder to create a video surveillance system. The main benefit to a wireless IP camera is the camera is easily moved to any location in the home. Provided it is within the recommended distance for the router to receive the signal transmitted by the camera or there is an ethernet connection. A wireless IP camera requires initial configuration through a router or connected directly to the internet through an ethernet cable. Once the router is configured, software installed, the camera is placed at any location in the home to capture video.
Carrier Current
The difference between a carrier current camera and a wireless IP camera is the way the signal is transmitted. Carrier Current cameras are enclosed in a housing such as a radio or alarm clock just plug them into a wall outlet. There are many different housings to choose from. The electrical current powers the camera and transmits the signal to a receiver plugged into an outlet near the computer. Software is installed and the camera is ready to transmit a signal to a remote location. Carrier current cameras have the flexibility to be moved from one location to another. The only stipulation is they have to be part of the same overall circuit as the receiver.
These are three different system choices to provide remote home surveillance.
