Now that US only 6" Kindle is being phased out (it's no longer available to buy new at Amazon) there are two choices for those who wish to buy a wireless digital book reading device. These choices are the Kindle DX and the Kindle with Global Wireless.
Each of these devices has it's strengths and which one you should choose really depends on what your own needs are (or the needs of the person you're buying it for, if it's a gift.)
Most obviously if you live outside of the United States, the Global Kindle is your only choice because the DX only works within the US, while the global version (as it's name implies) works in countries all over the world.
If you live inside the US then the choice comes down to saving money by buying the global wireless version or getting the expanded size (both as far as display goes and the amount of hard drive space it has) that the DX version offers.
The global version is just six inches diagonally while the DX version is 9.7 inches. The global version can hold up to about 1,500 books while the DX version can hold about 3,500 books.
Along with the expanded size, another advantage that the larger Kindle can offer is an auto-rotation screen. For example if you flip the device on it's side, the text on the screen will automatically flip too so that you can read it that way. This can be quite helpful with looking at certain types of material (such as some pictures.)
Other than the differences in size and where the wireless functions, these two devices are very similar and they both have all of the following features:

- Ability to download any book, magazine, or newspaper in just 60 seconds.
- Very long battery life. Can be used for days without a recharge.

- Built-in dictionary.
- Wireless access to Wikipedia and a basic web browser.
