Whether you want to protect your home from a possible intrusion, don't want to miss a home delivery, or like to know who's approaching before he rings the doorbell, a driveway alarm is a useful addition to any home security system. The driveway alarm comes in a variety of styles, each of which has its unique way of protecting your property and alerting you to a presence there. Both wireless and handheld models of the driveway alarm are available in different detection ranges, from 1,000 feet to 2 miles. Some use tones to alert you; others use recorded messages, or allow you to talk back through an intercom system.
Driveway Alarm Fundamentals
Every driveway wireless alarm system has two parts: a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter detects an individual presence, usually through infrared sensory equipment, and alerts you via the receiver. In some cases, the receiver allows you to speak through it and out through the transmitter. The sound of your voice (or a recorded one) is sometimes your most powerful weapon when it comes to preventing intrusion and/or burglary.
A driveway alarm can be installed in different locations to ensure you'll be alerted well in advance to any human presence on your property:
1. In your yard, hidden from view
2. As an intercom system at your gate
3. Beneath the eaves of your roof
4. Around the perimeter of your property
Driveway Alarm Features:
For security guards or people who live on extensive acreage, the handheld driveway alarm is an excellent source of both security and communication. It allows you to keep your driveway alarm receiver (or transceiver, as it's sometimes called if it enables you to speak back to the receiver) always at hand or on your person for fast action. A standard, wireless driveway alarm is better suited to a homeowner living in a metropolitan or suburban neighborhood, since it is easy to install and alerts you to motion immediately, but allows you to act without having to physically be in touch with the receiver. Plus, there are numerous features in each system that tailors the driveway alarm to your needs and preferences.

F1 Focus Avalanche Transceiver $204.95 Ortovox F1 Focus Avalanche Transceiver The f1 focus is the most widely sold avalanche transceiver worldwide and is a long-standing favourite with professionals. The analogue technique of the f1 focus is completed by a visual search indicator. If you put on the f1 with its lightweight one belt system, the device is automatically switched on. There is only one rotary switch for switch-over from transmit to receive mode. Under ideal conditions the f1 can achieve a range of about 80 m. Thus the search path can be shortened and you get faster to the buried person. The number of beeps indicate at the same time if you have to face a multiple burial situation. The visual search indicator shaped in an LED arrow doesn't only show the right way, but also when you have to turn the volume control switch for adjusting the receiver sensibility. In case of several buried persons the volume control switch serves to isolate the signals and to ensure an easy and safe search. If you have several searchers, an earphone is highly recommended. The earphone plug-in is located at the waterproof, shock-resistant and ergonomic casing. In case of a second avalanche you can use the express emergency switch-over from receive to transmit mode. The f1 uses 2 easily available AA batteries. The waterproof, shock-resistant and ergonomic casing has an earphone connection socket. The f1 surpasses the demands of the European standard 300 718 and is also available as a set with earphone and bag. ORTOVOX recommends regular training to get familiar with the avalanche transceiver. Transceiver $10.38 There's just not much you can say about the Nadas, one of heartland America's most accomplished and unassuming roots rock bands. Emerging from the college rock scene in Des Moines, IA, in the early '90s, the Nadas have built a significant regional following and piqued the interest of major record labels, but five albums into their career they're still releasing music on their own Authentic label and driving their own RV on endless tours. Their press agent suggests that Transceiver sounds a bit like a cross between Ryan Adams and John Mayer, but it will sound most pleasantly familiar to those who have fond memories of late-'80s bands like the Smithereens: good, solid meat-and-potatoes guitar rock with a minimum of frills (there's a Casiotone rhythm track on "Hold On," but it seems to be intended ironically) and hooks that sneak up on you rather than smack you in the face. The ones that hit the hardest right off are the rapturously tuneful "Diner" and "Hold On," but "Drowning" opens things with a Beatles-meets-Motown bang, and the gently heartbroken "One More Chance" ends things in an impressively restrained, floating mood.
