Whether you call them John Lennon sunglasses, Round sunglasses or Tea-Shades there's no mistaking their iconic status thanks to the legendary Beatle. They are just as popular now as they were 40 years ago when he first wore them, they are most definitely here to stay.
Sunglasses formed by two circular lenses mounted in a wire frame were originally known as "Teashades". They first became popular in the 1960's inspired by Lennon's fondness for them. Other rockers like Mick Jagger and Jerry Garcia also wore them in that era. Heavy Metal God Ozzy Osbourne still wears the circular shades to this day and Liam Gallagher wore them in the Wonderwall video. The glasses worn by Seraph in the Matrix Reloaded are Teashades. And most recently, Mary-Kate Olsen has revived the fashion industry's interest in them by frequently wearing classic John Lennon sunglasses.
However when we think of Teashades we think of John Lennon, and we know we're not alone in that respect. The term is undisputedly the phrase most often used to describe these sunglasses. The black and white photo of John Lennon standing cross-armed, wearing a "New York City" sleeveless t-shirt, and his sunglasses is perhaps the most popular still photo of Lennon. This portrait does its part to see Lennon's legend stays radiant and his sunglasses forever in demand.
Round sunglasses are rarely found in shops these days although they can be found at many costume websites. The majority of these are cheap and basic products aimed predominantly at the novelty market. John Lennon sunglasses have been designed and manufactured to eliminate the problems commonly associated with such products and are aimed at more discerning customers.
The perfectly cut lenses set in well constructed frames eliminate gaps around the edges and they provide full UV protection complying to the latest European standards. We first started up a UK based online sunglasses business many years ago motivated by the lack of choice of affordable good quality sunglasses in a market dominated by premium designer sunglasses brands. From the outset it was clear that there was a large demand for round John Lennon style sunglasses but we struggled to find good quality products we could sell at affordable prices. We were limited to either low quality products, usually sold through costume suppliers, or very expensive high end designer products. Having a passion for such sunglasses ourselves we decided to do something about it.
