I recently read about a bodyguard who was killed while protecting U.S. government officials in Iraq. It was shot in the neck, which was the only part of his body not protected by body armor.
Clearly, the individual who killed the gunman was a highly qualified high. At this level of management protection, the villains become more dangerous, better trained, and even more ardent in their efforts. These types of missions are designated as "high risk." The bodyguard was no doubt superbly trained and qualified, and had in fact been honored and awarded a medal by the Queen of England for his work.
And yet, he was killed on the job.
He was only 45 years old and leaves behind a young woman who is devastated.
I thought it was time to address the part of management of protective services is often overlooked, the risks inherent in this kind of work.
I remember when I was hired to work as a bodyguard of the prince. For many, his arrival on the music scene was exciting and avant-garde and the most fans, "Purple Rain" is a musical phenomenon.
The disadvantage is a certain segment of the population Prince considered the Anti-Christ. " I thought I had the greatest job in the world - a good salary, and of course the cachet of being one of the bodyguards for the hottest actor of the time. I vividly remember the time we went to a concert hall and had to do a security sweep with bomb-sniffing dogs because there were religious fanatics who thought represented Prince evil and claimed bombs had been placed on the scene to try to stop the concert. This is the day I realized it was not a "fun-and-play" of jobs. I realized that this high salary job comes with a very high price: potentially the loss of my life.
Now, for the most part, to protect a celebrity is not considered "high risk." (These missions usually for people with a good dose of military training and paychecks for these jobs are huge because of the level of risk.) However, even when working as a bodyguard for celebrities, there were a number of people who have a potential to be of the order. I remember one person in Atlanta, who approached me and said: "God has ordered to kill the prince. We have taken every threat very seriously. We never knew. Being associated with a celebrity meant that we were all targets. He really did not come to mind when I signed to work for the prince. I'm invincible.
I do not know that this case is the right person for a person with a family. While wages may be lucrative and attractive, but remember, if you have a wife and children, this is not your only life is affected, if you are injured or killed at work. The risk is real and the consequences can be considerable. As enforcement officers put their safety and even life on the line every day, the direction of protection may mean that you take the shot (or ball) for your employer. This is something to think about.
