When a company decides to translate its content to meet the demands of the business, it adds a personal touch and aids the end user to read and interpret the product/courseware in his/her own way.
A linguist/translator has to deal with diverse challenges of translating from one language to an entirely different language while remaining faithful to the original document conveying the intention of the original and complying with the grammatical and syntactical rules of the target language.
Hebrew is one such language, which requires the linguist/translator to undertake intensive research of the subject matter of the source text. This professional should:
• have a thorough knowledge of both source and target language
• be a native speaker/expert, be aware of verbal characteristics
• have profound knowledge and understanding of the customs, cultural differences, language specific humor and lifestyle of the target language to enable the end users to understand the translated work as a whole.
Though people think translation is a mechanical process where each source word is substituted for another in the targeted language, it is not so. Some noteworthy factors are:
• The meaning and connotations of the source and target language are different.
• The rules of grammar, correct spellings, writing conventions such punctuation, capitalization, commas, phone numbers, numbers, local colors, currency, idioms and phrases are essential to translation.
• Each language has its own set of rules that need to be followed. For instance, languages like Hebrew require alphabet translation from the right side of the page to the left. To avoid any hiccups, it's best to hire a Hebrew linguist to translate your courseware.
• Translators should also take care not to hurt the values and culture of a people, particularly when interpreting religious text. If the translator is an amateur, he could inadvertently rouse the sentiments of a religious or ethnic group and therefore infuse feelings of negativity. Therefore, such sensitive subjects should be deftly handled by an experienced translator.
• Unlike English language where one writes from the left side of the page to the right, Hebrew works in quite the opposite way. Hence, placing the content in reverse order is a big challenge.
• Special characters like -, @ #! etc, are often misplaced when the content is copied from a word document and pasted into a Flash, XML, Notepad or other such kinds of documents. Assigning bold formatting to one or two words in a sentence is difficult as the entire sentence becomes bold.
• Since Hebrew is based on characters, in English-Hebrew translation, Hebrew text can expand anywhere ranging from 20%-60%, while in Hebrew-English translation, the text can contract ranging from 10%-55%, making the translation process difficult. These are a few challenges faced during a translation project.
