Choose between the processor or processor-based uninterruptible power supply can not be a simple "either / or" decision, especially above 10kVA. Both technologies have their place in the current scenarios of power protection, but the main differences between them are: the production of noise size physical efficiency and level of harmonic distortion of input they generate.
Two uninterruptible power drawings to produce a tightly regulated source of energy without interruption, but they differ in how they generate the voltage required by their inverters and their output stages.
Transformer-based UPS: until the early 1990s, the conception of power uninterruptible power line was based on the processor. Today, design is still available, but usually in larger sizes UPS eight to 800 kVA. The most common applications are large industrial sites.
This type of UPS has an inverter output transformer robust isolated, which makes it more suitable for the type of application where there is a risk of electrical noise, spikes, transients, and potentially, a high degree current short-circuit.
The inverter generates AC power from its power source current, which is introduced in a transformer. The primary function of the transformer is to increase the voltage converter ac to that required by the load. The processor also protects the converter from being unloaded, while providing galvanic isolation (a process of isolation of input and output).
Modern designs use inverter IGBTs (insulated gate bipolar transistors) instead of more traditional switching components (Such as power transistors and thyristors). IGBTs combine the power capability of fast action and high bipolar transistor with the control characteristics a gate voltage MOSFET to form a versatile, high frequency switching. This has resulted in more powerful, efficient and reliable inverters.
Transformer-based UPS is also provided with an option to double-entry standard, which can be selected during the installation by removing Simply connecting a connector from its input terminal. This allows it to be powered from two separate sources of AC adding and additional resilience. An inverter transformer can be installed with a dual input capability, with supplies from the same source, but it is usually a factory option-FIT.
Uninterruptible Power Transformer: UPS transformer a new design, usually available from 700VA to 120kVA. The main objective of the introduction of transformer units was to reduce overall physical size and weight thereby providing uninterrupted power supply unit more appropriate for small installations and / or room computer or office-type environments, where space may be limited. It also generates much less noise and heat than its cousin transformer based and has much less input harmonic distortion levels making it compatible with the environments where electronic equipment (including computers) may be more sensitive to this type of distortion.
Instead of the step-up transformer, a transformer UPS uses a staged process of conversion tension. The first step combines a rectifier and inverter to generate a reminder dc power for the inverter. An uncontrolled phase bridge rectifier converts AC power to DC voltage. This is passed through a booster circuit mid-way through the stage voltage DC to 700-800Vdc generally from which a battery charger and inverter are fed. In the second step, the inverter takes the power boost converter and it flips back to an AC voltage to power the load.
Advantage further this method is that the rectifier can operate from a period of three or single phase input supply. This can be configured to install systems to 20kVA. A control system ensures a stable, regulated voltage dc DC is supplied to the UPS at any time and the UPS can operate independently of changes in output load or UPS fluctuations of the supply network or disorders.
Choosing between transformer-based or processor without interruption Power Systems: In many applications the choice between the two can be clear. This is where the two ranges overlap, in terms of power, that the decision is more complicated. Consideration must be given then: cost initial purchase, size, operating costs, the installation environment, and in particular, the levels of harmonic distortion of input they generate. Both models can be used in parallel to achieve higher levels of availability and resilience.
During the last decade, the gap between these two technologies without power interruption has reduced the manufacturers have implemented common techniques and research and development efforts of two models. The driving force behind this was the cost and size, along demand to improve operational efficiency and reduce the generation of harmonics. In terms of online performance, both models offer the same level of performance and are classified as systems of PFD (voltage and frequency independent - in accordance with EN / IEC 62040-3). Their main differences are their effects on the upstream supply and operating environment.
Transformerless UPS are generally considered more effective and having a power factor higher than a design based equivalent of the transformer, therefore, operating costs may be lower.
Below 10kVA, design transformerless UPS dominates the online market without power interruption and has become the norm within data center environments because they offer a more compact space, more operating efficiency and production lower noise. However, the strengths of the design of the transformer core are involved in the industrial environment.
