If you have installed a fire bunker in your home, you should have a plan to use it your maximum safety. In many cases the intensity and speed of the bushfire can not be predictable and hence it is only your own survival plans that determine your luck during a fire danger. Just Like a bushfire survival plan you can write a fire bunker plan and keep it in your home and inside the bunker. In case any bushfire has reached your place and you want to take shelter in a bunker, do the following preparations immediately.
o If you have pets in your home bring them first inside the bunker and tie them or put them in separate cages. Keep food and water for them and try not to let them know what is happening outside.
o Turn on the radio for latest news and keep your mobile phone with you.
o Do other important fire preparation tasks in your home and alert other family members.
o Wear cotton or woolen clothes during fire.
o Arrange water bottles with adequate water.
o Keep candles and matches
o Take important documents and valuables from home and keep it inside the fire bunker.
o Keep torch lights and batteries
o Keep first aid items.
o Keep hand gloves, face masks, leather shoes and cotton socks.
o Keep fire fighting knapsack or spray pack.
The above preparation is utmost important before the actual arrival of the fire. Running in the last moment to get back things from the house is risk and should be avoided. Children should be with you and under your supervision. It is the responsibility of the adults to make everything calm and settle unnecessary worries of the other members by showing courage and patience. On entering the fire bunker you can ensure to check the following:
o Close the doors and vents.
o Use torches or solar lights if you have kept.
o It is important to note the time of entrance in your bunker.
o Should be fully aware of the maximum time you can spend inside the bunker.
o If you are staying inside for considerable long time, and if you have taken compressed air inside, release it slowly.
o Check for any gas coming inside through any leak and if it is close it with wet rag.
o Wait till the fire front passes. In most cases it will be 15 to 25 minutes.
o Check the outside noise and try to see the conditions outside. If it is safe slowly open the vents first.
o You can try mobile phones to call or message friends and relatives or fire service personnel.
o If it is totally safe you can open the door and come out but do not leave children or pets before you step out.
o You can attend any fire fighting task in your house if it is possible.
After the fire you can register with the authorities. If anybody has burnt appropriate fist aid and medicines may be given to save life.
