I live in a mountainous area where the weather is very unpredictable. Heck, maybe that's true for everyone. Discussing the weather is thee universal conversation starter and gives you something to talk about when there is nothing else you can think of.
The passion we have for discussing it almost makes you believe that you just might be able to have an impact on the weather, whether it rains or snows, is sunny or windy, and/or all or none of the above. We all blame meteorologists when they get it wrong, and rarely when they get it right. But, I suppose that comes with the territory.
The weather is just plain fascinating no matter where you are in the world. It affects daily life more than anything else I can think of. The only thing any of us can do is try and be prepared for it. Personally, I love that we're all at the mercy of it. It makes life more interesting. The unexpected storm is a thing of beauty and a forceful reminder that we are truly at Nature's mercy. "She's" the one in charge, thank you very much.
As it should be, if you ask me.
It might be true that people complain more about the weather than anything else. Even more than politics. It's one thing that binds us all together whether we like it or not. It also serves to unite us. We're always willing to lend a hand to people we don't even know when outdoor conditions become fierce, especially in catastrophic events. It brings the best out in the human race.
It's strange that we might actually be able to affect the weather when you consider the Global Warming aspect of our impact upon the Planet. The tons of pollutants that civilization pours into the atmosphere appear very likely to be the culprit in shifting weather patterns, drought, peril to many plant and animal species, our air and water.
Regardless of your opinion on the matter, there is no doubt that something is happening out there. Glaciers are melting, temperatures in some areas are getting hotter while some are getting colder, precipitation rates are changing for different locales, and the overall temperature of the Earth and its main component, water, is unquestionably rising.
There's that famous quotation about weather that I've always loved: "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." None other than Mark Twain, quite possibly the best quotation writer in history. Weather does indeed make dunces of us all.
And never forget this ace-in-the-hole when you're talking to someone and there is absolutely nothing to say: "Boy, some weather we're havin'!"
