The System $10.94 The System is a "Swinging London" comedy with an unsettling undercurrent of bitterness and cynicism. Oliver Reed plays a girlie-magazine photographer, the self-appointed leader of a group of handsome but unscrupulous bachelors who hang out in a British seaside resort. Their avowed goal is to seduce and abandon as many wealthy young girls as possible. One of the group, jealous of Reed's success, uses their "system" to hoist the leader on his own petard. Michael Winner solidified his reputation as a "mod" director in The System--and also displayed his utter contempt for the pretty young people he depicts. The film was released to the US under the more bankable title The Girl Getters. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

System The $11.7 Rated: PGSynopsis: The System is set in a British seaside village where the local young men mingle among the summer's tourists in search of sexual conquests. The group's leader, Tinker (Oliver Reed), aims to entrap a fashion model (Jane Merrow) from a well-to-do family, but he finds himself unexpectedly falling in love. With the tables turned, Tinker begins to see that maybe it's not the tourists who are being used in these sexual games. |

System $15.18 It's hard to call System a comeback, as Seal never really went away (despite the long gaps between albums), but this 2007 album arrived with the greatest anticipation he's had since the mid-'90s, when his second eponymous album arrived just after the twin hits of "Crazy" and "Killer." All that anticipation had little do with Seal's music, it had more to do with his sudden re-emergence as tabloid fodder in the wake of his 2005 marriage to supermodel Heidi Klum. In the wake of the runaway reality TV hit Project Runway, Klum's star never burned brighter, and its luminescence spilled over to Seal as well, helping to propel him back to the spotlight. Stature so increased, Seal decided to ditch longtime producer Trevor Horn and hire Stuart Price, Madonna's collaborator for her calculatedly retro-disco Confessions on a Dance Floor. Seal employed Price for a similar purpose but instead of reaching way back into the electro past, he decided to revive the house-inflected sound of "Crazy" for System, right down to how the album's opener "If It's in My Mind, It's on My Face" rides a similar stuttering, surging sixteenth-note hook into its chorus. System may be a dance album but it never feels as if its meant for clubs and parties, unless they're upscale cocktail parties. This may not be as soft as the music he made after "Kiss from a Rose," but the feel is the same: it's calming, atmospheric music, even when the beat pulsates relentlessly, as on "Dumb" or "The Right Life." As this is an appealing sound, System goes down smooth, even if it's rather strange that it is so nostalgic for the pre-Clinton '90s, but this is so much a production piece that, apart from the acoustic "Rolling," the only song that stands outside of the sheer sonic gloss is "Wedding Day," a genuinely odd piece of kitsch duet with Heidi herself. She acquits herself well as the spouses exchange pledges of devotion, but it's just too silly to take seriously, yet it's so sincere in its convictions that it is more grabbing than the rest of the record. And it just may be appropriate that Heidi Klum dominates System, as she is the one responsible for Seal's return to the limelight, after all. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Bill Bottrell - Mellotron; Chris Bruce - Guitar (Acoustic); Eric Schermerhorn - Guitar |

The System $20.32 The System was one of several "expose" films inspired by the Kefauver crime committee. The title refers to the manner in which a major gambling syndicate can so insinuate itself in "respectable" business circles that it becomes virtually impossible for justice to prevail. Big-city syndicate head John Merrick (Frank Lovejoy) is targeted for investigation by a crusading newspaper. The publisher (Fay Roope) uses this opportunity as a means to squelch his daughter's (Joan Weldon) romance with the unscrupulous Merrick. Called to testify before a crime commission, Merrick at first invokes the Fifth Amendment. But a series of crushing personal blows, coupled with the realization that his fellow hoods have left him to twist slowly in the wind, leads to an abrupt change of heart on the witness stand. The System boasts one of the most impressive supporting casts in any 1953 film, including virtually every actor who's ever played a thug or lowlife: Dan Seymour, Frank Richards, Vic Perrin, Henry Corden, Bruno VeSota, etc. etc. etc. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

The System $19.96 After a frightened teenager is cut down by police bullets during a botched heist, a reporter investigates. The story leads him to prominent businessman John E. Merrick (Frank Lovejoy), the secret boss of the gambling ring that had the youth ensnared in a web of wrong-way bets. And now Merrick's carefully constructed world of family, upscale neighborhoods, country clubs and community respect begins to crumble around him. In this canny thriller, Lovejoy, the granite-jawed leading man in such '50s gems of paranoia as The Hitch-Hiker and Shack Out on 101, takes his tough-guy persona and gives it a gutsy twist, creating an unusual and provocative crime-caper protagonist: the crook with a conscience. ** PLEASE NOTE: This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. These discs are expected to play back in DVD video Play Only devices and may not play back in other DVD devices, including Recorders and PC Drives.** |
