It was in the year of 1750 that Benjamin Franklin talked about flying a kite. Research was being conducted to prove that lightning was electricity. Many major fires took place during the 1700's and buildings and houses burnt down due to being struck by lightning as most structures were built from wood.
How the Benjamin Franklin kite flying experiment worked: A tall lightning rod was attached to the outside wall of the house whereby one side of the rod was pointing upwards and at the other end a cable was attached, and the cable ran down the side of the house and buried about 10 feet into the ground. (No kite was actually used!)
The pole attracted lightning and in turn sent the charge deep into the ground which ultimately helped to lessen the chances of homes burning and fires in general.
It was in the 1750's that Franklin published his proposal allowing him to prove that lightening is electricity by flying a kite during a storm. Contrary to popular belief, the Benjamin Franklin flying a kite experiment was never performed by Franklin, but in 1752 the experiment was performed in France by Francois Dalibard.
The experiment was performed using a 12 meter iron rod as opposed to the kite and this rod in turn extracted electrical sparks. It was during the 1860's to the 1910's that the golden age of kiting began as kites were being used mostly for scientific purposes such as meteorology, aeronautics, wireless communications as well as photography.
Here's some background information about kites. Basically a kite is a flying aircraft which depends on tension of a tethering system and the lift that makes the kite fly when air flows in and over the kite producing pressure above the and pressure below the wing. Kites are usually heavier than air and there are kites that can be filled with hot air, methane, hydrogen or helium which keep them a float.
