Interviewing experts in your niche is one of the best ways to not only build your online credibility within your niche but also add quality content to your podcast and website that your podcast audience will appreciate.
In my previous article I detailed how to find experts in your niche that would make great interview subjects and how to approach them. In this article you will discover the best ways to record these interviews and producing your interview podcast.
The two ways I record my interviews is via:
- Skype
- Telephone (land line)
Skype is a free software program that allows you to make calls over the Internet. Making calls between Skype users is free which is one of the main reasons why Skype is very popular with podcasters. You can make Skype calls to landlines and cellphones for a fee. The fees are very competitive compared to your local phone companies in the U.S.A.
There are several recording programs that are designed for Skye. Pamela is one of the more popular one. The cost varies depending on the minutes allowed to record. You can even use Pamela for free for up to 15 minutes of call recording. Up to 30 minutes the price is $12.95 and unlimited call recording for $24.95. For Mac users Audio Hijack works like a charm to record Skype calls. The price is $32.
Both Pamela and Audio Hijack are easy to use and they record your Skype calls as MP3, WAV, and OGG files. Once you're ready to conduct your interview simply hit the record button and your Skype call will be recorded. Make sure the other party is aware you will be recording the interview since this is required by many state laws. Once the interview is finished you will have an MP3 file of the recording. Simply import into Audacity (a free audio recording software) and you edit, save, and post as any other podcast. It is very easy to record your interviews using Skype and one of the recorders like Pamela and Audio Hijack.
Telephone (land-line)
If you don't want to use Skype you can use your good ol' telephone land line. You will need to have a digital recorder and a recorder control adapter. I use an Olympus digital recorder which retail around $60 and a Radio Shack Recorder Control adapter for $27. You simply hook up your land-line via the Recorder Control and plug in your digital recorder to it and you're set to start recording your interview over your land-line. Once the interview is over you need to export the interview from your digital recorder to your computer. The Olympus exports it as a wav file. Once on your computer import the wav file into Audacity to edit and convert it to an MP3 file for your podcast.
Skype is a lot easier and the quality is better but as you can see you can also use your land-line if your prefer. I don't recommend using a cellphone since the audio quality will be spotty at best. Do not allow the interviewee to put you on speaker phone. The audio quality will be terrible.
