Tourist Turner the Sketchbook Artist
The English Romantic artist J. M. W. Turner was found early in life to have the gift of a great artist. Turner was foremost and first an oil painter, but on seeing his watercolors many feel he is one of England's greatest watercolorists, too. By age fourteen he was accepted to the Royal Academy of Art schools and by age twenty one exhibited in that prestigious group's annual exhibition. Later in life, his style was appreciated and loved by many of the emerging "impressionists".
Turner was a privileged tourist. He was the guest of many rich benefactors and enjoyed the advantage of traveling throughout Europe and in doing so he filled hundreds of sketchbooks that fortunately we have today. Now in a world of laptops and Moleskine journals it is wonderful to view and celebrate Turner's tourism and his influence on impressionism and art in general. His sketchbooks have inspired a new surge of artist notebook sketchers and an appreciation of human talent to counterbalance a overly digital world.
Tourist Turner traveled all over Britain and Europe and in his residual artistic flotsam are thousands of sketches and watercolors in twenty years of journaling. Some drawings merely suggest an impression and others are full blown with pen, watercolor and gouache. Whether formative or finished each of these pages offer a glimpse of true talent. One aspect in nearly all renditions is his ability to master the capture of light on form. Given his mastery of perspective with this wonderful light he permits the viewer to fall into the image and jump through the page window to his 18th century Europe.
Much of Turner's meanderings were a result of commissions from wealthy patrons. His topical renderings were penciled in the habitats and neighborhoods of the genteel. The good life is abundant in Turner's world, but having said this, Turner was a deft reporter of nature's wonders and her might. In his most impressionist mode with only minimal effort his watercolor brush can immerse you in a drowning sea churning the depths of a frothy hell.
With the usual disdain by the English of their French cousins either by war or fear, many of the his countrymen were enjoying transportation improvements that opened up the Great Isles to exploration. Turner enjoyed many of the classic haunts we tourists visit today, be it a cathedral or castle, he loved the history and culture of his time.
Turner's brushstroke has a hook that pulls the viewer to active participation. He leaves an unfinished work your imagination loves filling. Though complete, its efficiency wastes no paint. Turner if living today would frequent art forums and enjoy sharing en plein air adventures with many of today's sketchbook tourists.

Sketchbook $13.58 Req resurfaced on the left-leaning Warp after two LPs recorded for big beat boutique Skint, and the results put to shame any notions of underground rap practiced by Rawkus or Def Jux. Though his sub-basement sound aesthetic won't win him any crossover converts, Sketchbook makes a good listen out of downtempo beatbox musings, similar to DJ Vadim's earliest work. The beats have an absence of sound quality, reminiscent of tape decks dusty with age, and there's really not much else happening: a few odd keys, melodica, bells, and occasionally some light scratching far away in the background. Those looking for label context will find much to enjoy, since Warp's notion of avant-beat listening music makes far more sense for a producer like Req than the go-go party music of Skint. ~ John Bush, Rovi |
