I made a mistake last week involving pants ... I bought them. The problem is, and I must say that I knew very well what before I left the store, they fit.
In my defense, I am a man. I do not like clothes shopping, for starters, and when you throw the extra step of having to try things, I reach a point where I'd be happy to plunk my credit card on a costume ill-fitting clown, if I thought he was going out of the store faster.
But the real mistake was to take the pants home, Keywords cut, then decide they do not really match. Now I'm stuck with them, and although he spent most of this week trying to convince me they are good, I know I am a liar.
From my experience (and in this case, I do not think it applies to men only), most of us settle on a profession in about the same way. We wander around, try a few things, and if we find something we can squeeze in, we take it.
Unfortunately, and based on emails phone calls, and cups of coffee with lots of working people, there are too many of us to tolerate the work, instead of prosper him. We have, in effect, cut the tags off before finding a good fit.
Which brings me to Michael Jordan. Here's a guy who, in his 13 years as a professional basketball player, has won just about every imaginable prices in this sport, it is probably the best ever to walk the face of Earth. So much so that if you had to describe the attributes of the player's basketball Ideally, you'd more or less describe Jordan, up to and including winning personality, which made him ideal for promoting products.
But here's the key question: Is it really that extraordinary events as a human being, or was he just lucky? Lucky in the sense that the things that came naturally to him - height, speed, strength, intelligence, endurance, competitiveness and love of basketball - just happened to be a perfect fit for an existing occupation?
I think it is more the latter. Sure, he worked hard, but not more than you or me. The fact is that, if being unusually high have a negative effect in basketball instead of the positive that is, Jordan could have just turned out to be more good-looking guy named bald Michael.
The next thing I will say may seem exaggerated, but I do not think it is.
I think we All Michael Jordan (or Bruce Springsteen or Donald Trumps, or anyone who has had extraordinary success in a given field). The problem is that most people, the unique set of skills, abilities and interests within each of us does not fit perfectly, and of course in a existing profession. We have to choose among the available options and settle for good enough.
Or perhaps we have not. My point of view - after spending the first 20 years of my life in regular jobs, being slightly successful doing things that I unloved - that is to start your own business is to create a custom occupancy. Livelihoods unique in bringing together all the things you enjoy and are good to do in a basketball-soaked, crowds, "Can I have your autograph please?" concoction. It is better than working.
And while you're sitting here thinking about 2007 - particularly if you are not excited by what you do every day - perhaps it is time to adopt a new approach.
In the coming year, why do not all spend a little less time to adapt to the test our selves in an idiosyncratic pair of pants in force, and a little more time to reflect on a new wardrobe entirely ... That based on some natural talents and interests are only ours.
