Fear can easily affect your performance when running, especially in competition. When you prepare something, and you practice and test what you do, then you go a long way towards easing the fear of failure or to perform before a crowd or simply put you on the line.
These fears may never completely disappear, but being prepared will help you to overcome them and perform up to your abilities.
The worst fear is the fear of the unknown. Not knowing what is to come, or how your body cope. This is something that can happen no matter how well prepared you are. Your first bodybuilding competition, your first marathon, your first track meet. They can all be sometimes scary. Even when you're known to a particular style of competition, there can be concerns. Fear of competition to a new level of fear competition in a new place, or fear of the weather.
I can offer a very good example of overcoming the fear of your preparation and your common sense. The weather forecast before the 2007 Boston Marathon called for some of the worst weather in the history of the race, and days and hours before the race has done little to allay those fears.
When it came time to change into my running clothes and put my luggage I ignored my better idea and gave in fear of what the course might look like. Despite my assumption that it would not be too much rain the course, and ignoring that temperatures were higher in the low 40s or 50, I decided to play safe and wear more clothes than I needed. I told my friend that I would regret this decision, and I was right.
I lost my hat in less than 3 miles. I tried to put it in the pocket on the back of my shorts, but it fell to less than 3 or 4 steps and lost. I had my favorite long-sleeved shirt, a vest over that to help keep warm in my chest the rain and wind. Plus I had my jersey with my race number. By mile 5 I had pushed the sleeves and wished that I had my race singlet. For the vast majority the race, I was overheating.
I was prepared to race the same way I always race my marathons. I probably would not have done all my goals if I had not given into my fears, but I at least made one of them. The only Once on the course while I was happy to have all layers that were left was near the base of the hills of Newton, where I not meeting 3 or 4 minutes of heavy rain and winds in the 20-40 mile per hour. The rain went away quickly, the wind stayed there for the last 8 miles.
The next time you are preparing for a competition, think the fears that you are going to have to try and find a way to deal with them. Recognizing fear exists, it is the best way to turn this fear into something that will help you to excel rather than hold you back or sabotage your performance. My fears got the better of me and drove me to not achieve my goals. This is not necessarily a bad thing, without fail, it is difficult for us to grow and improve. The best way to learn what works is to find all the ways that do not work.
