"Why Latin? Many often ask me for my interest in continuing to do. Why I like Latin quotations and words, when I could quote directly from the English sense - never even have to reconcile with a single word of Latin.
This is my attempt to explain and justify this interest. I write the following in my hope to convince you that my reasons are well founded. And in the process make you understand why you have to deal with Latin too.
First, you already know many words of Latin. Many "English" words are actually Latin words. Some examples: alibi (Elsewhere), agenda (things to do), aliases (otherwise), itself (by, or itself), per capita (per capita), per diem (per day), ergo (therefore), pro rata (in proportion to the value) - All these are Latin words that you already know and use, in all their freshness - without the benefit of any translation. Did you at least 60% of English words are derived from the Latin languages? Get the English dictionaries, examines the etymology of words, and appreciate the number of words that have Latin roots of words and derivations. Most, if not all the names of the 206 bones in your body are in Latin, your doctor will confirm. Our lawyers also Latin (as a basic source of words) in their legal vocabulary which confirms that the influence of Roman law is still alive in their words use (if not also the essence of thought that permeates their domain).
Similarly, the most common abbreviations you use are actually Latin. Just to name a few: AD is Anno Domini, in fact (in the year of the Lord), etc. is in fact and so on (and the rest), for example, is such gratia (for the sake of example) really means mo modus operandi (mode operation), op. cit., commonly used in literary ways citato opera (in the works just cited), NB nota bene (note well or watch) ... I can go on and on ...
Many organizations, state, and country currencies are in Latin. Just to name a few: An ad mare usque Mari (From sea to sea) - Canada's motto, Ad lucem (To light) - motto of the University of Lisbon; A Pluribus Unum (From many, one) - the motto of the United States; empty Esse quam (A, rather than to seem) - motto of the State of North Carolina; Semper Fidelis (always faithful) - The motto of the U.S. Marine Corps, Semper Paratus (always ready) - the motto of the Coast Guard of the United States. Latin has softened some of this call "when used in a currency, hence its widespread use.
During our days at Saint Louis University Boys' High School (forty years ago) we were the "elect" who were the last of the classical section. We studied Latin for four long years - as a special topic added to our regular high school program and the reason why I share this love and gratitude for this "death" but the special language. As explained students by teachers, Latin: (1) teaching English language like no other language, (2) students preparing for study modern languages, (3) grammar teaches much more effectively than any English program, (4) Trains students in the habits of precious mind: memory, order, attention to detail (5) gives a lifetime value of reading, (6), while Simply beautiful. Even if you do not follow the first four, and settle for the last two items / reasons, you have a good motivation be interested in Latin - that we continue to enjoy our offerings and over again throughout life, for their wisdom, are unspoiled by age - Theirs or ours. At best, Latin is a model of an order, polished and balanced language. It is a pleasure to read, write, and even recite.
Even if you do not fully agree with my brief explanation, you will surely agree with the third and fourth paragraphs of this article (at least). Hence, ultimately, if you like Latin or not, you can not escape. This is something that is here to stay. You can run but you can not hide America. Like it or not, Latin is something you have to deal with.
