One of the most important things that can put someone out to buy a property in France is the language barrier. As an Australian who moved to France, without even the classroom core French that many people in the United Kingdom had, I would like to give my opinion of the barrier French language and the way I saw how different people coped with this barrier.
I separated the four different types of people.
1. Students
2. The Explorer
3. The Muddler
4. The snub
The Student
This type of person I am most envious. You can always find a English / French in arms reach of them. They probably spent months intensively studying various courses in French before settling in France. Their French dialect, is the style manuals and the French love of red tape offers no fear.
The Explorer
As Sir Walter Raleigh, the explorer located in foreign environments and find strategies to understand their environment. They learn by experience and probably have no idea of what looks like a French word in written form, but are already talking with ease and even pick up the local dialect. They learn the same how a child learns to speak, by necessity. Being part of the French workforce, watch television in French or join one of the many French social clubs allows you to be constantly hearing spoken French and you learn without even knowing that you are. Explorer is a creature with a social habit.
The Muddler
The Muddler says "Life is too short for stress. Although the type of students and Explorer type are talking freely, the Muddler is still using to develop hand gestures to be understood. If you not need to work in France, and you have a spouse or friend that you can enjoy an intelligent conversation English, this approach may be the most relaxing and also the funniest. This is the category I fall. I have French friends and enjoy the conversation, and our biggest laughs are often how my French is. The other day I put my hands over my ears and I wanted to say that I'm not listening, but he was released in French: "I closed eyes. "
The snub
While the love of shock type the French way of life, they degrade the value of the population to such an extent that they have not even bothered to get by with a few basic words. I once met a man who has lived in France for six years, and the only word he has bothered to remember French is "Bonjour". There are enough English-speaking cliques in each village for this type of person to live quite happily in ignorance of the French language.
In conclusion, the question is: "How do I need to know French to live in France? "The answer is" No, but the words that you seek to draw business, exploration or the study will only make your life in France that much more enjoyable. "
