Roller, engineering steel, silent and detachable as well as offset sidebar; these are all prime examples of the types of chain drives available and when you look into them you can soon start to see why chain drives are often picked over belt drives. But what exactly are chain drives and their advantages?
The concept behind them is the fact that each link within a chain drive transmits load in tension to and from the sprocket teeth. They are a system of transferring power from one shaft to another through the sprockets and the chain. Take the example of a roller chain; they are composed of one chain that wraps around two or more sprockets. This type of chain is made of alternating inner and outer links assembled in pivots by bearing pins and bushes. With a unity chain however the sprockets of the roller have only several teeth exposed to the chain. With these type of chain drives there are sprockets attached to each roller. It is these types of chains that are often used when it comes to aspects such as engines.
As I previously mentioned chain drives are often chosen over belt drives on various occasions. Reasons for this include factors such as chain drives are often made to be a lot stronger; some more of the main reasons for this can be seen below;
o You are left with no slippage between the chain and sprocket teeth and there is only a small stretch, which is significant as this allows it to carry heavy loads.
o Some of these can be replaced without having to disturb other components that are mounted on the same shafts as sprockets.
o They have a longer operating life expectancy as the friction contact that occurs between hardened bearing surfaces is separated by an oil film. Also they have a longer life due to the fact they don't deteriorate with age and they are unaffected by the sun as well as ranges of heat, moisture and oil.
o Chain drives are able to perform even in hostile environments that include aspects such as high temperatures, high moisture, oily areas and generally dirty environments as well as corrosive atmospheres, this is especially true when high alloy metals and other special materials are used.
o It is thanks to characteristics such as the ones named above that chain drives are an example of a positive piece of machinery. It is due to these facts that these drives only require a few sprocket teeth in order for an effective connection which will reduce ratios and increase load capacity.
Chain drives have been used in motors and motorcycles throughout the years, one of their main uses in our day and age however remains bicycle chains. They are still a basic feature of a bicycle design today.
There are many forms still in existence and use but the one that dominates the market is known as Roller chains.
