Rodeo is unlikely that the first thing that comes to mind of the visitor when they evoke images of tropical forests in Hawaii, but rodeo here is an old tradition and folklore. The cows were first introduced to Hawaii in 1793 by George Vancouver and Kamehameha the Great once imported vaqueros Mexico to teach his people how to manage them. Rodeos were an important part of life in a ranch here early Kona. As such, the rodeo is much more here in Hawaii than in much of the continental United States, remember, three generations of Hawaiian cowboys lived, worked and died Hawaii before cattle were already conducted in Wyoming or Montana, United States, most often associated with livestock and rodeo.
The livestock industry in Hawaii began February 22, 1793, in Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island. British navigator George Vancouver presented Kamehameha I in four cows, two sheep and a ram, he had brought from Monterrey, Mexico. In January 1794, Vancouver has landed many more cattle Kealakekua and formally requested a kapu to kill them.
Kamehameha ordered the first stockyard cattle pen in Hawai'i to be built to Lehu'ula. Still in use today, the paddock closed more than 400 acres. However, most cattle are raging, and with the kapu against the slaughter of wild beasts in place, the wild herds has become vast and unmanageable.
Archibald Menzies, surgeon of the ship, wrote in his diary in 1793: "When they [the cattle] shove, they climbed up and down the country in fear and terror is not some native they fled with the utmost speed in all directions
For over thirty years, the kapu against killing wild animals has been force and the wild herds growing farmland destroyed, ate cultures, often rush through the village destroying homes and claiming of many lives. June 21, 1804, the first horse and the mare were landed on the Kona coast of the island of Hawaii, the days of free movement scale cattle were coming to an end as the number of men on horseback up and they began to tame the coral and wildlife.
Kamehameha recruited Joaquin Vaquero California Armas to help contain the wild cattle and train the local cowboys. As the years passed, more mission vaqueros Spanish California came to work for the fledgling industry of livestock. They brought their horses trained, Spanish saddles, spurs, sombreros and Spanish traditions of livestock, transmit to the Hawaiians they were trained. They also formed the Hawaiian leather-working, beef jerk and cure hides. Soon, hides and tallow for a major export from Hawaii.
Hawaiians called vaqueros "paniolos" a corruption of the Spanish word "Espanola", which remains today the word Island Cowboy ".
Kamehameha lifted the kapu to kill wild animals in 1830, the rapid increase in whaling vessel traffic at that time had caused a increase in the demand for fresh and salt beef. And soon the wild herds were thinned to meet this demand.
Cattle born on the island of Hawaii were often shipped live to other islands and the mainland. In the early days, cows were simply run into the surf, swim to boats and clinging to the hull by attaching their horns to the brim, then rowed out to the waiting ship. In the late 1800s, jetties and piers began to be built in different places of shipping around the island and cows were quickly hoisted by a crane on the bridge of ships waiting.
Another advantage of this cultural cross-pollination that is not immediately identified with the livestock industry is the advent of modern Hawaiian music. When the Mexican vaqueros moved Hawaii, they also brought their guitars and their love of music. A deeply musical people themselves, the Hawaiians were very interested by the latter, the first stringed instruments they had never seen up close. Fearing the Hawaiians would steal their guitars, the Mexicans them tune after use, making it much more difficult for the Hawaiians eager to unlock their secrets music. However, the Hawaiians have been better musically and quickly learned to make their own settings. Instead of tuning the European standard which require different fingerings to make agreements, the Hawaiians developed their own open tunings rope more suitable than the key and style of their native music. Called "slack key guitar" these settings are a unique feature that make the sound of Hawaiian music so distinct. The signature instrument of Hawaiian music, the ukulele, has actually been introduced by settlers Portuguese. In Hawaiian, "ukulele" means "dancing flea".

A Hawaii resident since 2000, he quietly and humbly inhabits Kailua Kona, doing environmental good works, surfing the be-jeezis out of the local waves and frenetically producing somewhat bizarre and mildly disturbing programs for local television which have recently been lauded as: "Ignorant", "Arrogant" and "Totally Insane". You may say what you wish about him, Donnie does not care. For somewhere underneath those swaying palm trees, in those warm aloha breezes, he is far too busy praying for good surf to hear you...
