Choose between IP and analog security cameras is one of the first and hardest choices facing all prospective buyer of a system of closed circuit television, whether for home surveillance or monitoring company. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages, and manufacturers are not trying to make it easy to decide between them. There are a lot of exaggeration and buzz marketing at the moment because of the growth of the industry.
Both cameras work by using CCD and CMOS chip. These chips turn visible light (and in some cases, infrared light) into a signal. analog cameras transform the signal into something that television can see, a bit like a camcorder. IP cameras do something a little more complicated. They take the information from the chip and send the analog signal the encoder. This encoder is combined with an embedded Web server. This allows the camera to become a network device. This allows it to be seen by users on an existing or new network as a web page.
Analog cameras have been around since the 1970s, beginning as a vacuum tube based devices. Since then, cameras have improved and better. Improved resolutions have been held each year. Other features include the addition of an analog output for the camera so that it can become a bridge between an analog system and a system based on IP.
IP cameras can be connected to a network through a wireless transmission or by Cat5. Through the use of switches / Hubs / routers and Cat5 can be extended almost indefinitely. The use of IP cameras may require the installation of new outlets RJ-45. Existing outlets are generally not well placed to secure the connection of the device. Some IP cameras are hybrid in nature, allowing both network and analog connections. Toshiba line of IP cameras generally have this feature.
Advantages Analog
- Cost: analog cameras generally have better price / performance, then IP.
- Flexibility of design: There are many types of cameras varies, small cameras hidden inside PTZs large domes with IR. This may meet certain targets more easily using a camera designed for your needs.
- Compatibility: analog cameras set to NTSC or PAL signals. In North America, nearly any camera you buy will be NTSC. This makes it easier to use existing cameras, or mix and match suppliers to equipment.
- Maturity: A lot of teething problems have been worked OUT. Things like compensation masks privacy (Darkening an area of privacy on a PTZ) and backlight lesions are learned in the past.
Analog Disadvantages:
- Analog cameras have built in features like digital zoom that IP have, except at the highest prices.
- Wireless analog cameras have problems with interference and are not encrypted. Any who can see the signal.
- analog cameras can be more difficult to manage over long distances.
IP Advantages
- Better support for wireless: Wi-Fi Analog has more problems with interference and network cameras in operation. Standards 802.11x encryption integrated.
- IP cameras can already take advantage of existing wiring.
- Adding one or two cameras on a remote site can be easier.
IP Disadvantages:
- High bandwidth: It varies by the camera, but 500kbps to 1.5 Mbps is a common scale.
- Cost: Due to the cost of equipment is moved on the camera, IP cameras cost more then comparable analog cameras.
- Vendor lock-in: Many third party applications support more than one type the camera, but most vendors only support their cameras. Since all brands support all features, it can make the choice brand hard right, unless you turn to third.
It is important to assess your situation and evaluate the two options, not only for your current needs, but also for expansion possibilities in the future also.
