In continuation of my series on the arithmetic, I present here a topic which has been a cornerstone in my book "Arithmetic Magic. To understand how this concept one AIDS in the operations of arithmetic, we need to throw some basic ideas first. The "Quick Add" is an extremely useful tool to help children master arithmetic fast, especially applied to summarize numbers. Today the simulator has crippled even the most skilled students. Just one knows his multiplication tables fundamentals such as the calculator does the ubiquitous operation him. This is understandable, and a comparison I can make is a matter of remembering phone numbers. For many phones store cellular everywhere, I do remember the numbers of people I did not need. Similarly, students can not add or multiply because the simulator it does for them. It is a problem for the following reasons: 1) does not control the arithmetic leads to problems mathematics on the road, 2) not be able to add or multiply the frustration engenders when homework base and 3) lack = lack of doing future to do, which further increases the chance of mathematical illiteracy.
The Quick-Add method gives students an alternative sustainable in the speedy execution of money without using a calculator or pencil and paper. This method is based on the idea of "supplements". The word "complete" means "complete" and that's exactly what these figures. A "10-complement" completes the 10, a "100-complement" complete the 100, and so on. Why this idea is so useful is that associated with the inherent simplicity of the metric system in which all units and measures are based on the number 10 and its multiples. To begin to understand this idea, let me present the scenario Next: If I said to a child, "What is 8 + 9?" And I wanted a quick answer, the child would probably start and stumbling to resort to counting fingers or trying feverishly to count the money. Certainly there are children who are fast to this kind of thing and, rather fast, can come with the answer of 17. My goal, however, is not on these children. The healthy have no need of a doctor. My accent is placed on children who struggle with basic arithmetic and experience enormous frustration that, when germinated, leads to negative attitudes towards mathematics and finally crystallized in self-doubt, fear and the fear of this subject more wonderful. The consequences are truly disastrous that many students, I worked with consciousness - after I cured their ills math - they were actually good math. Imagine what better solve the problems, we would usually, if we had math on our side rather than against us!
Returning to the idea of supplements. In Example 8 + 9 shows the sum is 17. How much faster would a child get to the answer 17, if I said "What is 10 + 7? Now, a detailed analysis of the difference between 8 and 10 + 9 + 7 reveals some very interesting things, and shows how brain circuits capitalizes on some very important facts of mathematics. Consider these. It is true that 0 and 1 are two numbers very special, but for addition, 0 is the special issue which the property applies here. The number 0 is the "additive identity of the property." It simply means that 0 yields more number of others given number. That is 0 + 5 = 5 0 + 4 = 4, etc. (from a broader perspective, I suppose that one can say that one is special as adding 1 to any number is fairly intuitive that we just increment this number with a unit: a 8 + 1 = 9 - you get the idea.)
now complete a number are those numbers, when added the number given, give a sum of 10. For example, the 10-complement of 8 is 2, as 8 + 2 = 10. The 10-supplement 3 to 7, since 3 + 7 = 10. How to link The concept complementary to the Quick-Add is as follows: in the analysis of 10 + 7, we rewrite this example as 10 + 07. We insert a 0 before the 7 a placeholder for the empty column scores, and put the numbers in the parallel structure. Let us now examine how the brain works circuit is + 10 07. The brain performs 1 + 0 in the column of "tens" and 0 + 7 in the column "the", capitalizing on the property "additive identity" 0. This is actually a "no self." Therefore, our strategy more tool will convert most of the problems associated in their "Quick-Adds." Once done, which greatly simplifies the additions.
