I knew my husband would have enough leisure, when he retired last February at the age of 51 years. At least I thought it would be up last summer when he discovered the squirrels in our time, robust garden. Much of his distaste for our beloved cucumbers were munched on, when our back is turned, by the colonies of squirrels invade our territory.
Off to the Internet, he went in search a human rodent trap. Hits and e-mails later, here! It is a site that was more than willing to send the trap much-needed week.
I look forward to his new toy, my husband watched with dismay that cucumber was dismantled after by voracious squirrels who fortunately we visited. Finally, the package has arrived! The family watched with amusement as Dad unwrapped his new acquisition, barely restrain his excitement. "Quick! Give me some peanuts!" he screamed to anyone within earshot. Armed trap and peanut in hand, he went out into the garden for the filing of its price.
Glancing through the window from time to time, we would see a squirrel crawling after the other toward the bottom of the fence carefully to inspect the new addition to the garden. No luck. Sometimes the trap has been triggered and peanuts were missing, other times it was triggered with peanuts still intact. "This is it!" Cried my husband. "We need a squirrel-cam! "The family looked and sighed. Oh no, another toy for Dad! But one morning, as Dad and I were in bed, we heard a very loud metallic "diver!" We both decided, "Uh Oh!" and jumped to run window. Indeed, he was there, our first prisoner! My husband jumped up and down in pure joy - I had to keep sliding down the stairs in her birthday suit.
I've never seen the dress so fast. It was at the door like a bullet to collect the trap with the squirrel growling. He searched the garage for something with a long handle to release the squirrel after transportation far enough our neighborhood, filed a trap and an old broom handle in the trunk of the car, jumped in the front seat and roared off with the prize.
Now 33 squirrels later, it is now November and the trap peanut-Laden is still in the garden sterile pending his next victim. Family quizzes Daddy, why we still need a trap in the garden. Dad exclaimed: "Well, now that the squirrels are ruining my lawn by digging holes for their peanuts! But we all know differently, Dad has a new hobby?
(Ed.Note: No squirrels were harmed in any way - they have all been safely transported to a nearby forest to regain their means of squirrel ish!)
