Ecuador has recently imposed trade restrictions are tariffs on certain imports. The cry went out that it is "protectionism" and hinders free trade. Economists worldwide have become fearful that such actions may be followed by other nations as a tool to revive the economy National. The questions are what are so bad about some form of protectionism? Is globalization of the economy really that great? Do such things that really hurt a free market economy?

Ecuador uses the dollar as currency. With our economy in the dumps, there little wonder that countries like Ecuador have concerns. Some in Ecuador, tariffs, while slowing imports and hurt Companies that rely on foreign goods, tariffs have been a boon for local businesses. Is this a bad thing? Is it wrong not dependence on foreign imports to meet local economic demands?

We hear much talk about free trade. But the degree of freedom are the markets? In a perfect world, companies that produce products should be able to sell their products anywhere where without fear of trade restrictions. The theory being that those who have the best product at the best price gets the sale. However, global markets are far from free. Although many products in the United States come from China, they are not of Chinese businesses are paying their employees decent wages. They U.S. companies often pay dirt Chinese workers low wages. We are all familiar with sweatshops and labor abuses children in foreign countries. Is it the characteristics of a free economy?

During the colonial period of the economic system was called mercantilism. Mother countries have exploited their colonies for their raw materials and then colonies Buy finished goods from them. Then came imperialism, where the powerful nations to extend the sphere of economic influence and once again, controlled companies and markets other nations. Now we call globalization, where mega-corporations to exploit economies of third world countries. In both mercantilism and imperialism, the systems were openly led by the governments of countries of operation. In globalization, support exploitation is more secret and hidden under the mantra of free trade. We all know too well with the mass exodus of U.S. manufacturing and the services sector in Asia and Mexico. This was done because the wages in these countries were under daily and regulation of business almost nonexistent. In the absence of tariffs, the products are then sent to the base of the country at prices well below those of local businesses. Clearly, the global economy is under the control of a few.

So, back to Ecuador. With trade restrictions, local farmers are doing better. Local manufacturers are better and overall, local businesses are growing. Who is hurt? Companies who exploit foreign workers and undermining local trade. In a capitalist economic system, trade barriers are presented as an anathema. Nations that import tax is called the dirty word "protectionist". Until there are universal laws of work, wages fair trade regulations and uniform control and equitable access to employment and resources, the so-called "market system free "is simply not free at all. If a nation has the capacity and resources to produce local products, why their businesses to be undercut by the giant foreign companies and unscrupulous? Certainly, if a product can be produced locally, the markets to imports of such products must free and open. Business and labor, competition free and fair is a laudable goal. But I do not want my clothes made children in sweatshops. I do not want most of my food products imported from foreign countries that have no environmental regulations. I have no problem with bananas from Panama, we can not grow here. I have no problem with hand-painted tableware is the reflection of a foreign culture. I have no problem with bamboo products from China. The point is, for me, globalization should not be simply a new name for imperialism. We need a system that allows nations to free exchange of products that are best produced by each nation under a truly free of all rules and regulations. Protectionism can not be so bad after all, and it could create jobs at home which should never have left.

The Diary of a Nobody

The Diary of a Nobody

$5.49

THE DIARY OF A NOBODY began as a serial in Punch and the book which followed in 1892 has never been out of print. The Grossmith brothers not only created an immortal comic character but produced a clever satire of their society. Mr Pooter is an office clerk and upright family man in a dull 1880s suburb. His diary is a wonderful portrait of the class system and the inherent snobbishness of the suburban middle classes. It sends up contemporary crazes for Aestheticism, spiritualism and bicycling, as well as the fashion for publishing diaries by anybody and everybody.

`Why should I not publish my diary? I have often seen reminiscences of people I have never even heard of, and I fail to see - because I do not happen to be a `Somebody' - why my diary should not be interesting.'The Diary of a Nobody (1892) created a cultural icon, an English archetype. Anxious, accident-prone, occasionally waspish, Charles Pooter has come to be seen as the epitome of English suburban life. His diary chronicles encounters with difficult tradesmen, the delights of home improvements, small parties, minor embarrassments, and problems with his troublesome son. The suburban world he inhabits is hilariously and painfully familiar in its small-mindedness and its essential decency. Both celebration and critique, The Diary of a Nobody has often been imitated, but never bettered. This edition features Weedon Grossmith's hilarious illustrations and is complemented by an enjoyable introduction discussing the book's social background and suburban fiction as a genre.

Zlata's Diary

Zlata's Diary

$12.99

When Zlata's Diary was first published at the height of the Bosnian conflict, it became an international bestseller and was compared to The Diary of Anne Frank , both for the freshness of its voice and the grimness of the world it describes. It begins as the day-today record of the life of a typical eleven-year-old girl, preoccupied by piano lessons and birthday parties. But as war engulfs Sarajevo, Zlata Filipovic becomes a witness to food shortages and the deaths of friends and learns to wait out bombardments in a neighbor's cellar. Yet throughout she remains courageous and observant. The result is a book that has the power to move and instruct readers a world away.

Chechnya Diary

Chechnya Diary

$6.99

Chechnya Diary is a story about "the story" of the war in Chechnya, the "rogue republic" that attempted to secede from the Russian Federation at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Specifically, it is the story of the Samashki Massacre, a symbol of the Russian brutality that was employed to crush Chechen resistance. Thomas Goltz is a member of the exclusive journalistic cadre of compulsive, danger-addicted voyeurs who court death to get the story. But in addition to providing a tour through the convoluted Soviet and then post-Soviet nationalities policy that led to the bloodbath in Chechnya, Chechnya Diary is part of a larger exploration of the role (and impact) of the media in conflict areas. And at its heart, Chechnya Diary is the story of Hussein, the leader of the local resistance in the small town that bears the brunt of the massacre as it is drawn into war. This is a deeply personal book, a first person narrative that reads like an adventure but addresses larger theoretical issues ranging from the history of ethnic/nationalities in the USSR and the Russian Federation to journalistic responsibility in crisis zones. Chechnya Diary is a crossover work that offers both the historical context and a ground-level view of a complex and brutal war.

Susan Cheever observed in a New York Times Book Review appraisal of his memoir Down from Troy that Richard Selzer "cares more about truth than consequences . . . [and] immerses us in the facts we all know but hate to admit." Selzer`s Diary picks up roughly where the memoir leaves off, as his writing life flourishes and surgical career ends. Stripped of the doctor-writer`s "privilege of [walking] about all day in the middle of a short story," Selzer shifts his focus to his interior life. In Diary, the author`s successes and regrets, as well as the humor and sadness that surround him, are revealed with the same empathy and vividness that made him one of the great doctor-writers of modern literature. Diary brings together stories and observations dashed off on park benches and in library carrels over the past decade. Following the success of such books as Confessions of a Knife and The Doctor Stories, Selzer`s diary entries recount life lived in the shadow of both achievement and disappointment. He introduces a varied cast of characters, from the distinguished fellowship of the "Boys Friendly" to his "fellow loonies," and evokes the streets, buildings, and parks of Yale and New Haven with vibrancy and affection. And throughout, Selzer faces the looming specter of old age. The distinctive voice that paved the way for other notable doctor-writers like Jerome Groopman and Abraham Verghese is revealed here to be no less compelling with the spotlight turned on himself and the drama of everyday living.
