Book Designer

So you've decided to self-publish your book. Great! But now you've got a problem. You've got to format your book yourself. In fact, you've got to design your entire book layout -- especially the dreaded cover. But first you need to find a good book template for the book itself.

Where do you look?

There are several places you can try. You can try Microsoft and its office templates. After all you've probably written your book using Microsoft's Word. So it makes sense to try there first. Unfortunately, you'll find that most of the available templates are for manuscripts, for one off books, or for children's books. So if you're self-publishing that won't work. Or you can go out and Google for a book template. Actually that will produce a couple of serious contenders. The problem is finding them. Mostly it will find a great plethora of web page templates for book sellers. Not exactly what you were looking for.

But there is a source of templates that are perfect and reasonably easy to find. I'm referring to the print-on-demand printers. Most of them have a series of templates that they recommend. While these are not imaginative templates they are quite suitable. If you're printing a self-help or executive book, they may just be what you want.

Start off by determining what size book you intend to publish. Each of the sizes -- paperback, trade, letter or one of the myriad other sizes -- will have its own template. This template is actually a combination of the visual issues, the paper size and the physical requirements of the printing and binding processes. So you'll need to keep track of where you found the template so you can go back for more information. Once you've decided what you want your book to look like, it's time to go template hunting.

Start by Google searching for print-on-demand and vanity presses or publishers. Many of them will hide their templates -- for a vanity press that's part of what they sell. But many others -- especially the print-on-demand presses will provide templates to help you design your book layout correctly. Download a selection. You only need the one that is for the size book you have chosen. Don't forget to keep track of where you found the template and any size allowances the publisher has mentioned. Once you have a reasonable selection, compare all of them with your book to select the best template.

Now be sure that the press you've determined to use for the printing will be able to print the result. Don't forget that you need to decide who is going to be your printer. Determine if their printing and binding requirements are the same. If they aren't you may have to adjust the template. In any case, you now have a template you can use for your first book. Or you could be smart and lazy and just hire a book designer to layout the book for you.
