Barking: Why Dogs Bark
Have you ever thought about how your dog got to be such an excessive barker? Well dogs are bred to bark. Right off the bat we have to understand that dogs were bred to bark. When dogs became domesticated their level of barking went up. I think this is because the very first people that domesticated dogs discovered that a barking dog would alert them to intruders.
What better than a barking dog to keep the local barbarians away or at least warn if intruders were approaching! So if a dog was a good barker then he was allowed or encouraged to breed again. There is a study you may have heard about that looked at foxes. Foxes were allowed to breed and the cutest and noisiest ones were then bread again. It only took a few generations of this selective breeding to get some really good barkers.
On the contrary, you don't hear wild canids, (such as wolves and foxes) barking much. They don't want to be discovered. Dogs were bred to bark. So remember you are dealing with an innate behavior and you'll need to train your dog when it is acceptable to bark and when not to. Understanding some of the reasons he's barking is a good first step.
How To Train A Dog When It Is OK To Bark
When it comes to barking, starting out with a puppy and reinforcing good dog behavior is essential. If your dog or puppy starts barking, the first thing you want to do is go over to your dog and find out what he's barking about. Maybe there is an intruder or he's lost his toy under the chair and needs help. Once you understand what all the barking is for you can then take appropriate action. If he's barking at a stranger out the window, you can acknowledge that your dog has seen something. "Yes Fifi, that's Duke going for a walk with his owner." Then tell your dog "No Bark". If you need to remove the distraction, close the blinds or take your dog to a new place.
Most of dog training is about being consistent, persistent and patient. Never, ever let a dog get away with a behavior you don't condone. You might think it's cute, but dogs learn really quickly and often they learn the things we unintentionally teach them and end up regretting. If Fifi keeps barking after you've said "No Bark", then you can use "Quiet" followed by a correction. What's a good correction for your dog? It really depends on your dog, but a small dog or puppy shouldn't need much.
Get in her face, put your hands firmly on her neck and startle her. Then say "Quiet". You really want to get Fifi's attention and let her know who's boss and that you are serious. Take the dog away from the thing that is making her bark so she can stop barking at it then tell her good dog. You may need to manage the situation for a while but if you are not able to manage the situation you will never be able to train your dog. You must figure out how you can manage the behavior right away.
If you repeat this every time your young puppy or dog barks you will teach your dog that it is OK to bark once when he notices something but then to be quiet after you find out that it is OK. After all, you'd hate to teach your dog never to bark and have an intruder walk into your house.
