My recent decision to move to Panama for four months sounded a bit like my decision to go to Costa Rica for six months, or to Chile for five years. I made all travel arrangements on my own, including a stopover in Costa Rica to see my boyfriend. But when it came time to say goodbye after spending three weeks with another human being to always side by side, I felt a sudden unfamiliar anxiety about venturing out of myself in a new country.
Traveling alone comes with ups and downs. In our daily lives we rely on friends, family and colleagues to help us through today. We often overlook how interwoven our actions and accomplishments are, and how our surroundings define who we are.
As I sat alone at the bus station in San Jose during the two hours that the bus was delayed, I started to be afraid of crossing the border alone with my life down into two large pieces of luggage. I wondered how I could find to be my co-worker unfamiliar bus stop the next day, and how I spend 16 hours on a bus alone? Want to crawl toward the heat, the protective arms of my boyfriend, I boarded the bus and looked at my decision to 16 hours of time and space between us has become a reality.
At the Albrook bus terminal in Panama City, Panama, I watched with amazement my entourage, who looked straight back at me. "What was this little American girl is alone in such a big place?" They wondered. I was obviously not an intimidating sight, and found it fairly easy to get help from others. A taxi driver dialed the phone my friend on a phone for me, a guard watched my bags as I used the toilet, and another passenger offered me a ride to my new home.
Fortunately, I was able to decline this offer as my new boss rolled up, as if the reference to the place where I I was in his white Ford Explorer with a big smile on his face despite the early morning hours. And I knew that everything would be alright.
Best friends or recent knowledge, we are never on your own in this world if we choose to be. Traveling "alone" may allow you to build your own single path, but there will always be someone nearby for you to fall back on. Just get used to accept the varied ways in which these people come. One never knows his own limits, until you get out of the comfort zone, forge new paths and let you rely on a stranger.
Claire Saylor recently moved to Panama from Costa Rica and is now focusing her time writing about Panama culture as well as general Panama vacation ideas.

Terminal Invasion $9.35 The setting for this nail-biting thriller is a snowbound rural airport. A group of outer-space aliens, disguised as human, take over the airport, in preparation of conquering the earth. The fate of mankind ultimately rests in the hands of two others trapped in the terminal: a fiercely combative female pilot named Cathy Garrett (Chase Masterson), and convicted murderer Jack (Bruce Campbell). The only problem is, with the aliens totally camouflaged as earthlings, no one can tell the good guys from the bad. Filmed under the title The Devil's Pass, Terminal Invasion made its American cable-TV premiere via the Sci-Fi Channel on September 14, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Terminal Tower $20.78 At the outset of their career, Pere Ubu released some of the very first independent-label American punk singles on their own Hearthan (later Hearpen) label, which constitute some of their most celebrated and legendary work. Terminal Tower: An Archival Collection gathers 11 tracks, mostly from the crucial Hearthan/Hearpen period (including the entire Datapanik in the Year Zero EP), plus a couple of later U.K. singles. This music's historical importance is undeniable -- not only because of the band's pioneeringly independent status in an area not as celebrated for its punk scene, but also because Pere Ubu was one of the first bands to push their art punk sound into territory later classified as alternative, a testament to their forward-looking approach. None of that would matter if Terminal Tower didn't hold up so well as a listening experience, but Pere Ubu still sounds utterly original. David Thomas' unearthly voice mumbles and sobs the angular melodies over a backdrop of garagey guitars, startling sound effects (from both guitar and synth), and odd dissonances. Moments of jarring, apocalyptic terror ("Heart of Darkness," the creeping, crawling "30 Seconds Over Tokyo") sit next to oddly beautiful introspection, sometimes on the same song (the aching angst and evocative guitar solo of "Final Solution"). Meanwhile, poppier tracks incorporate those avant-garde textures into a gleeful dada bounce. The two tracks unavailable anywhere else, "Not Happy" and "Lonesome Cowboy Dave," are slices of poppy dementia that may make the collection worthwhile for devotees who already own the box, especially since this is such a strong, coherent listen. Terminal Tower stands as the best introduction to the band not only because of its stellar material and relative accessibility, but also because it largely lacks the arty indulgences that popped up even on the group's most consistent albums. Now that it's back in print, it's essential, groundbreaking listening. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi |

Terminal Velocity $11.99 "In 1970 I realized that the Sixties were passing me by. I had never even smoked a joint, or slept with anyone besides my husband. A year later I had left Nicky, changed my name from Ellen to Rain, and moved to a radical lesbian commune in California named Red Moon Rising, where I was playing the Ten of Hearts in an outdoor production of Alice in Wonderland when two FBI agents arrived to arrest the Red Queen . . ." So begins Blanche McCrary Boyd's brilliantly raucous account of self-styled feminist outlaws, their desperate adventures and extraordinary fates. Ellen, the narrator of Boyd's previous novel, The Revolution of Little Girls , this time pierces the heart of the sexual revolution in her quest to find a woman hero or--by default--to become one. Ferociously paced, Terminal Velocity delineates six wonderfully engaging characters: Artemis Foote, for whom being rich, talented, and beautiful is a kind of game; Jordan, a messianic fugitive who becomes Ellen's lover; Amethyst Woman, a Marxist/Leninist dentist; Ross, a red-diaper baby and now a columnist for Ramparts; and Pearl, an art history professor turned hippie. At the center of this vortex is Ellen, prior to her transformation happily married and a rising young editor at a genteel publishing house in Boston. Together with these women, she is caught in the political and moral tailspin of the Sixties, living in a sexualized world-without-boundaries that leads them, eventually, to destruction, acceptance, and even redemption. Deadpan funny and exquisitely moving, Terminal Velocity brings Boyd's lyricism, humor, and depth to material largely unexplored in American literature. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

The Terminal Spy $8.32 On November 1, 2006, Alexander Litvinenko, a former KGB officer, sipped tea in the upmarket Millennium Mayfair hotel near the American Embassy in London - tea that had been spiked with a rare radioactive isotope called Polonium 210. Twenty two days later, he was dead. And the mystery behind his murder would be revealed as more baffling and more labyrinthine than any John Le Carr plot. Litvinenko had sought asylum in London and from there had become a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin's government. His is the most high profile of a string of mysterious deaths of a number of Russian dissenters, which heralds a new era of KGB-style authoritarianism and terror. It quickly became known as one of the most mysterious and audacious crimes of the post-Cold War era, and triggered an international investigation led by London?s top counterterrorism officials. Blending the pace of a thriller with original reportage and research, The Terminal Spy documents Litvinenko?s life and death, the ensuing police investigation, the reaction from Vladimir Putin and others in Moscow, the Russian migr set in London, and the implications of this case for nuclear proliferation and international terrorism in the future. It is a shocking endictment of how contemptuous of the rule of law certain governments are and an chilling reminder of the power - in every respect - of the New Russia. |
