Once prominent landmarks that dotted rural America, barns are disappearing at an alarming rate. Recognized as one of the earliest forms of architecture in colonial times by the industrial revolution, these icons represent and record our agrarian roots. As time passes and materials natural as barns are constructed of decay, every year we lose an important part of our collective past.
Large corporate farms dominate American agriculture today. The mega-farms spawn metal and fiberglass buildings that could be called barns, but are far from real barns. Real barns come in many sizes, types and styles. There was livestock, machinery, milking and hay barns. Round, rectangular or octagonal barns. Log in, colonial-style barns and Prairie. Large and small, red, white color, cedar shingles and metal covered. There was a barn for every need and every occasion. Most doors with large rotation, single-pane windows and multiple levels. Nooks and crannies of houses were barn owls, box lubrication and agricultural tools.
Barns have been all over the countryside and used as benchmarks for foreigners to travel in the countryside. "Take a left at the Red Barn" was common in grasslands and livestock routes. Barns became billboards in the early 1900s advertising for the masses in rural areas. popular from life in the stables in the 1960s, the adaptive reuse saved many barns rot. In the barn wood in the 1970s was rage decoration and many barns were destroyed after their weathered surface was removed for the suburban families rooms. Hand-hewn beams were cut for home and wood stoves.
Every summer, I drive through agricultural areas experiencing, most barns have disappeared. The landscape is different and lonely without them. They were a barometer of prosperity, one could say the economic viability a farm and a region by the way the barns have been preserved. Without you I lose the icons, no more red barn Remind me to turn left. The parlor windows replaced with large yellow building with skylights pole fiberglass. We must save the barns leak. National Trust and prosperous agricultural Magazine has a program called Barn Again! that helps bring these important architectural icons.
