The three basic types of home security alarm systems are wired, wireless, and hybrid. Regardless of the type of alarm that you choose as your security system, you need to research each type of alarm so that you will have a full understanding of what you are getting. Remember that all alarm systems are not the same and they do not all provide an equal measure of protection against intruders.
Hard-wired security alarm systems are generally thought to be the most dependable. Hard-wired systems have a keypad, control panel, backup battery, siren, circuit boards, and a jack; all of which play an important role in ensuring that your security system functions at full capacity without fail. Hard-wired systems require a lot of work to install, so if you do not do the work yourself, the labor charges will probably be quite expensive, even if you are in the construction phase on a new home.
Hard-wired systems are incredibly expensive if you install them in an existing home, but if they are installed during the construction phase in a new home, they are actually very affordable. The sense of security they can provide for you and your family is certainly worth any cost, but to be realistic, you must choose a security system that is comfortably within your budget.
With these types of systems, the keypad sends commands to the circuit board, which is installed inside the control panel. Your control panel should be installed in a place that isn't easy to get to, such as a high ceiling, basement, or back room. The control panel is actually the thing that controls the operation of the alarm system, so you don't have to worry about battery failure or malfunction should the keypad get ripped off the wall.
Wireless security systems have become very popular over the past few years, but they are not the most reliable systems you can buy. The primary problem with these systems is that they can be disabled before a signal can be sent to either the alarm company or the police.
Wireless security systems are sometimes referred to as all-in-one units because all of the components are combined in one simple, easy to install package. They are very popular with security companies who are looking to install a system on the cheap, so be careful about this if you are considering hiring a company that happens to be offering a great deal such as free installation or a reduced monthly rate.
Hybrid security alarm systems are a unique combination of wired and wireless systems. In some cases, people are not able to use hard-wired systems because of the construction of their homes. For example, if you have plaster walls and/or ceilings, you will not be able to install a hard-wired alarm system. If you do have to install a wireless system, however, you can use a combination of a wireless receiver to go along with other alarm system components.
A good point to keep in mind is that when alarm system companies offer deals that seem too good to be true, they are more than likely only offering a wireless system simply because of the extreme cost involved in installing a hard-wired system. Before you commit to a product, make sure you ask the right questions to find out exactly what type of alarm system the company is willing (or planning) to install in your home.
