They don't bow to critics -- only to fans, and they're the reason why the band continues to sell records and sell out stadiums. The Tragically Hip are an honest man's band with an incomparable romance and fans are drawn to that. Their first for Rounder, In Violet Light is a tasteful blend of the band's sharp songcraft and Gordon Downie's classic poetic rants. Early on, Downie proclaims that there's "music that will make you feel great" on the celebratory "Use It Up." Name dropping Springsteen and Randy Newman around a song inspired by a Raymond Carver quote is clever and typically Hip. The ambitious drive of "Are You Ready," which is carried by the electric cross-fire of guitarists Paul Langlois and Bobby Baker, sparks enthusiasm whereas the airiness of "It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken" and "A Beautiful Thing" tame the band's dynamic disposition. The feverish "Silver Jet" is a great lyrical adventure; "The Dire Wolf" takes things a bit further with Wallace Stevens as its mainspring, soaring over the beauty of Newfoundland and the Bahamas. The Tragically Hip absorb their surroundings without getting lost, making In Violet Light a natural fit for loyalists. The lag of Trouble at the Henhouse is absent, while the matchless beauty of Fully Completely is reminiscent. The Violet Hour $11.98 In some ways, it's hard to believe that The Violet Hour is the Clientele's first proper full-length album. The band has released so many lovely singles and EPs in the five years prior to this album that it seems like a full-length release must have come out a few years ago (2001's singles collection Suburban Light doesn't count). The wait was well worth it, though; The Violet Hour not only perfects the gorgeously hazy pop of their previous releases, it also adds a guileless freshness to it that is completely apt for their debut album. As with most of their other work, in The Violet Hour's world it's always summer, and usually sunset; instantly nostalgic, poignant tunes such as "Voices in the Mall" and "Everybody's Gone" capture the dusky side of summer perfectly. Indeed, most of the album reflects -- and radiates -- warmth, from its generally languid mood to the way its songs blend into each other like slow-flowing honey. Alasdair MacLean's whispery vocals are drenched in faraway reverb, and, along with the band's sleepy guitars and understated drums, creates such an exquisite ambience that the album's unhurried tempos and melodies never sound boring. While "The Violet Hour" and "House on Fire" breeze along on slightly livelier tempos, and "The House Always Wins" ignites into the Clientele's version of rock, none of these songs break the spell that is cast by "When You and I Were Young," "Lamplight," and "Haunted Melody"; and that spell is deepened by the chiming bells that punctuate the album. With so much going on musically, The Violet Hour doesn't even need meaningful lyrics, but it delivers those too, especially on "Missing," where MacLean sighs, "I've got so much longing in my heart that I can't even sleep" with such sweetly quiet resignation that it's breathtaking, once you hear it. It's true that the Clientele's influences still shine through in their music, yet the band doesn't sound derivative; by not trying to overtly rework their sound or hide their roots, they allow themselves -- and their listeners -- to just revel in the beauty of their music. Esben and the Witch were nominated for the BBC’s Sound of 2011 just before Violet Cries was released, and it’s easy to hear why: even when they don’t do anything remarkably new with their ethereal style, they imbue it with a tremendous amount of passion. Nearly all of their songs come swooping in on chilly, swirling guitars and Rachel Davies' feverish vocals. Much of Violet Cries' success is due to her tremulous yet throaty voice, which is fragile enough for dream pop, but also possesses a howl that brings heat to her frosty surroundings. The album’s best moments connect with an intensity that few of their contemporaries can match: “Marching Song,” which was the title track of the band’s 2010 EP, is still a sumptuous calling card for the band, with layers of Davies' vocals swarming over intricate rhythms like a murder of crows, while “Warpath” continues the martial motif. “Light Streams” showcases Esben and the Witch’s impressive use of dynamics and space, sounding massive one moment and as intimate as a whisper the next; “Marine Fields Glow,” with its delicately dark guitars, lives up to the fairy tale eeriness of the band’s name, evoking the truly Grimm tales where children are eaten instead of living happily ever after.
