If you are like a lot of people, you are probably always on the look-out for tips and ideas to manage your time more effectively. In this article, I would like to offer 10 practical suggestions that have been proven to be particularly helpful:

1. Prioritize. The night before or first thing in the morning, take a few minutes to go over the things you need to do and put them in order of importance.

2. Have everything you need. Make sure you have everything you need before starting your work (or project) so you don't have to waste time going back and forth looking for or getting what you need.

3. Do first things first. In other words, try to do the most important or least favored thing first. If you get it out of the way early in the day, then you won't have to worry about getting done later.

4. Set time limits. Set a time limit for checking email, answering calls, and/or other projects and stick to it. Use a timer or your time tracking software so you don't waste more time then what you planned on.

5. Just say no. Believe me, I know how difficult it is to say no sometimes; but, you don't HAVE to do everything someone asks you to do. At the very least, don't answer right away. Give yourself some space to decide how you want to respond.

6. Just say yes. Huh? I know, I just told you to say no. However, having an " absolute yes list" of those things that are most important to you will help weed out those things that aren't aligned with what is important to you or your business.

7. Do one thing at a time. It may seem counter-productive (especially in this multi-tasking society), but focusing on one thing at a time really is more productive and faster.

8. Ignore the phone and email. You don't have to answer every email as it comes in or answer the phone every time it rings. Set a specific time once or twice a day to check email and answer phone calls.

9. Delegate. Delegate, delegate, delegate. If you aren't good at something, not jazzed about doing something, or don't HAVE to to it yourself, turn it over to your virtual or other assistant. If you don't have an assistant, get one.

10. Take a step back. Finally, don't forget to take a break. No matter how busy a person is, we all need some time to recoup and rejuvenate. You'll be able to have greater focus, make less mistakes and get what you need done faster.

Time $18.98 There's little arguing that Richard Hell was one of the most important figures in the early New York punk rock scene, and he left behind an impressive body of work that merged a distinctive and literate lyrical intelligence with the primal force of stripped-down rock & roll. However, by his own admission, the man lacked the ambition or inclination for a long-term career, and for the most part he pulled the plug on his life in music in the early '80s. But there's been enough lingering interest in Hell's music that he's periodically released collections of material from his archives, and this retrospective, Time, is essentially an upgraded and augmented version of his 1984 odds and ends compilation, R.I.P. In fact, disc one of Time contains R.I.P. in its entirety, with three additional tracks -- a unreleased demo of "Chinese Rocks" cut with Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, and two tracks from a 1979 session with the Voidoids, "Time" and "Funhunt." The material has been remastered, and the audio is certainly an improvement over the ROIR cassette version (and the European CD), though the Heartbreakers demos still sound like they were dubbed from wobbly fifth-generation cassettes and some of the demo material is a bit thin (though Robert Quine's and Ivan Julian's guitars sound noticeably stronger). The real attraction for longtime fans is the live material on disc two. There are 11 songs from an absolutely ferocious performance at London's Music Machine in 1977, which Hell (in his intelligent and witty liner notes) describes as "one of the most aggressive sets we ever played"; while the recording quality is only fair, it's a flamethrower of a show that puts the material on the fine Funhunt collection to shame. And the set closes out with four strong if less incendiary tunes from a 1978 gig at CBGB, with noted Hell fan Elvis Costello lending guitar and vocals to two songs. It's Time $11.98 Linda Eder's third album demonstrated her growth as a singer; for the first time on one of her records, you could listen through whole songs without being reminded of Barbra Streisand. She remained largely dependent for her material on composer Frank Wildhorn, but at least on this occasion, for the most part, Wildhorn worked on a consistent set of songs with the same lyricist, Jack Murphy; they came up with a varied collection not dominated by generic romantic ballads, though there were a few, especially toward the end. (There were also Wildhorn songs from his musicals Jekyll and Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and The Civil War.) Murphy's words approached wit on occasion, even if Wildhorn's music continued to hew to pre-rock pastiche, so that Eder, swimming in string and horn charts, still seemed caught in a time warp circa 1955, even when she was dropping references to RuPaul and the Internet. And she continued to be arrogant in her choice of covers, this time trying out "Over the Rainbow." This Time $18.98 Because of the five-year gap between studio albums and a major overhaul of his touring and recording band (only keyboardist/songwriter Jim Pugh remains from his last group but early collaborator Richard Cousins returns after more than 15 years), This Time is being touted as the beginning of a new era in soul/bluesman Robert Cray's long career. For better or worse, that's not really the case, as this is another in a long line of classy, well- produced, and immaculately played and sung releases from the always dependable Cray. The ballads, especially the slow-burning seven-minute title track, are some of the finest he has penned, although the singer/guitarist's well-worn themes of the emotional disconnects between the sexes haven't changed. Upbeat, more lighthearted material such as the opening "Chicken in the Kitchen," the organ-led jazzy "That's What Keeps Me Rockin'," and the tough Memphis groove of "Trouble & Pain," a tune that sounds like an Otis Redding outtake, alter the generally serious mood. The same holds for the jaunty Caribbean-inflected rhythms of "To Be True." But even though this isn't much different from Cray's previous 14 studio releases, it's a consistently engaging set that will please his existing fans. His expressive voice has always been the secret sauce that brought much needed spice to even ordinary material. This beautifully recorded, strong batch of songs doesn't contain any clunkers and Cray's distinctive vocals, especially on the more heartbreaking material such as the closing "Truce," are some of his best. As usual, his staccato guitar lines enliven the proceedings, even if they are generally kept on the back burner. When all the pieces slide into place, as they do on the six-minute funk-soul ballad "Love 2009," it's obvious that Cray has locked into his groove and the occasional experimentation of his previous studio release seems somewhat superfluous. Other Cray discs have been criticized for falling on the wrong side of the sleepy/stylish tightrope. Yet this one features excellent material played and sung with a timeless sophistication and intensity that, while not pushing the artist in any new directions, show that he doesn't need to expand his lyrical or melodic boundaries to excel at his craft.
