March 7th through March 13th was "Read an Ebook Week", and for that week, much emphasis was made on encouraging publishers, authors, and ebook reader owners to spread the word about the joys of electronic reading. Registered with Chase's Calendar of Events last 2004, this was already the event's 6th year. If you are an owner of the Barnes & Noble Nook or the Amazon Kindle, it is time to promote the benefits of ebook reading.
To those of you who have yet to embrace the ereader technology, here are some great things about it:
Easy Access. If you are a business person who travels frequently for work, an ereader is a perfect compact device that gives you access to your personal library, magazines and newspapers. No more lugging around of your favorite books or important reading resources.
Save Time & Money. Because you have the ability to download the next book quickly and easily, an ereader is a great time saver. Also, ebooks are generally less expensive than paper books, and you won't have to drive your car to the book store.
Space Saving. Think of all the shelf space you'll save just because your library is contained electronically on an ereader. All of your favorite reads will be accessible and easy to carry in a briefcase, purse, or backpack.

Reading $50.98 The past decade saw heightened policy activism in the field of reading at both the federal level and across virtually all 50 states. Initially sparked by disagreements about methods for teaching children to read, the so-called "reading wars" stirred heated debates on a variety of issues: levels and trends of reading achievement, pedagogy, standards and assessment, and education equity, among others. Embedded within these debates were the political agendas of state executives and legislatures, the interests of advocacy groups, and the ideologies of reading professionals, which were collectively shaping state reading policy development. Drawing primarily on interviews with 366 policy actors from nine states, this book presents a comprehensive investigation of the state reading policy domain employing multiple theoretical frameworks and research methods. Using social network analysis, the authors examined the interplay among a plethora of policy actors embedded in reading policy networks. They explored in depth policy actors' divergent beliefs on key reading-related issues, the causal stories told, and the policy solutions proposed. In addition, they examined the variety of lobbying tactics that interest groups utilized to gain influence over the policymaking process and to advance their policy agenda. As the most significant research endeavor in the area of state reading policy to date, this cross-state comparative study sheds light on the multifaceted nature and the intricacies of the policy processes in reading, and in education in general. The findings of this study bear important implications for both policy actors and education professionals. What emerges is a view of science in which observation relies on theory to give it meaning and credibility, while theory relies on observation for its motivation and validation. It is shown that this reciprocal support is not circular since the theory used to support a particular observation is independent of the theory for which the observation serves as evidence. |
